Dog Training a Doberman Pinscher to Walk to Heel and Follow Basic Commands.

Harvey is a 15 month old Doberman Pinscher who’s been living with his new owners for the last 5 months after being re-homed.  Ian contacted me for help with walking to heel and recall.

Harvey’s a big/strong dog who is pulling excessively on the lead and recall is none existent.  One of the most important basics to start with when acquiring a new dog is building a bond, something Ian hasn’t yet established.  Allowing Harvey to run and ignore commands has only re-enforced disobedience and ignorance to recall.

Today I was able to quickly demonstrate how to walk Harvey to heel with a loose lead.  When distractions were introduced it highlighted the importance for Ian to establish the commands and bond.  When walking Harvey I explained the importance of relaxing as any nervousness or negativity is fed through the lead.

Whilst we need to correct Harvey’s recall the most important outcome from today is heel work and re-establishing Ian and Harvey’s bond.

I’ll post further update when I next train Harvey.
